Based in the Twin Cities, Orange Whip is redefining the classification "cover band." While many other cover bands tend toward genre specialization, all too often sacrificing technical skills for stage gimmicks, Orange Whip's diverse repertoire and charismatic presence onstage have carried the band to ever increasing notoriety.
While Orange Whip has over 200 local gigs to date (in just over five years), the five members have a ten year history and over 400 gigs between them. Bassist Cory Wood joined up with guitarist/vocalist "Tuke" Weston, guitarist Vic Gervais, and drummer Aaron Purcell in late 1993, performing original songs under the name the Sea Biscuits. A couple of years later, Wood began moonlighting in guitarist/vocalist Gina Anderson's band, Otto's Jacket. While both groups had their fair share of live successes and critical acclaim, the end of the 1990's also brought the end of these two projects. Looking to continue performing in the Twin Cities, the five musicians decided to start up a cover band, and Orange Whip was born. Drummer Tim Ost, who already had been moonlighting with the band for several years, replaced Purcell on a full time basis in late 2006.
The wealth of songs that Orange Whip performs speaks for itself. (Please see the Song List page.) Based around the solid rhythm section of Ost and Wood, the songs are filled with the fretboard acrobatics of Gervais, supported by the tandem guitar stylings of Anderson and Weston. Vocally, Orange Whip offers up quite the one-two punch, alternating between Anderson's passionate belting and Weston's brilliant interpretations of singers ranging from Motown legend Al Green to Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst. With the understanding that they are as much entertainers as they are artists, Orange Whip puts on a lively and exciting show, never failing to pack a dance floor.
